How Exactly Is That Even Possible?

The likelihood of a breast cancer recurrence after fifteen years is not huge. And the likelihood of a breast cancer recurrence post double mastectomy is also a pretty small percent. But it can, and does, happen. And here I am.

I have had a number of people ask me how this is even possible, given that my breasts were removed in 2007. I am certainly not a doctor, but here is what I think the situation can be:

Not every single breast tissue cell can be removed during a mastectomy. There will always be a minuscule amount of that tissue left. So cancer can, and sometimes does, come roaring back to life. And according to my medical breast oncologist, it is very possible that these cells have been there for the last fifteen years and now, for whatever reason, they have awakened.

Go figure......
