The past week constitutes Week 1 of my radiation treatments. I had my final simulation last Monday and then began the real deal the next day. The great news is that I only have 25 treatments, so five days a week for five weeks. I had expected more so I was happy to hear this.
The whole process is the challenge. Driving to the hospital, finding parking, walking to the entrance, getting through screening, waiting for an elevator, going to the basement, walking to the Radiation Oncology department, checking in, putting on a gown. Waiting. But the actual radiation treatment is easy peasy. I believe the entire thing is under ten minutes and I feel nothing during the actual treatment. Then off the table, out of the room, get dressed, and repeat the process for departure. As one can imagine, it takes a chunk out of the day.
But what am I complaining about??!! I am alive! I am fighting to live! The Radiation Oncologist is being a bit aggressive with the total area being treated. Essentially it is the entire right side of my chest, then up over my clavicle and under my arm. We are going to find you and kill you, damn cancer cells!
